hollybrooke: (Wakefield vs. Wakefield)
So I've been re-reading the Sweet Valley High books since I stumbled upon [livejournal.com profile] 1bruce1 a few weeks ago. (And a BIG thank you to the person who posted the link at the Truly Outrageous! Yahoo group!) And it's all kinds of snarktastic fun. (And I never realized how much of a meddlesome, cheating hypocrite Elizabeth Wakefield is until now.)

Random House has re-released updated versions of SVH, and today, Playing With Fire and Power Play comes out. I have yet to get them, but amongst the changes made to Sweet Valley High in the last 25 years:

--the addition of modern technology like cellphones, CDs/MP3s, computers, email, etc.
--The Oracle is now a student-run news website, and Elizabeth's gossip column is now an online blog called "The Insider" (no more "Eyes and Ears")
--Elizabeth and Jessica no longer have "perfect size 6" figures, but "perfect size 4 figures."
--what high school has fraternities and sororities anymore?! (unless you go to prep school...I'm looking at Rory Gilmore getting pledged to be a Puff) Pi Beta Alpha is no more. Now SVH has a "Beautification Committee." WTF?!
--brand/designer name-dropping galore!!
--the Dairi Burger is now some Mexican food restaurant
--Jessica and Elizabeth now share driving a Jeep instead of the Fiat Spider, and Bruce Patman now drives a CADILLAC instead of his Porsche, and there's no more 1BRUCE1 vanity plate.

There's also been talk about Francine Pascal putting out Sweet Valley Heights, or Sweet Valley Confidential, something along those lines where the twins and all of the other central characters are in their mid-to-late 20s/early 30s and seeing where they are in their lives. And she specifically said, "Things change in ten years time. Where you'd think they'd be isn't exactly what happens." (I'm betting Liz is stuck slaving away as a gossip columnist at some magazine, not liking the job and itching to get out to do some REAL writing. You know, like in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.)
