Are these "windows security alerts" popping up in a website and claiming to scan your computer and this business? If so, you get those on macs and even linux computers (it's just more obvious that it's bullshit there because it's pretending to scan a windows machine). If you use firefox with the No Script plugin, this will go away (you just have to give permission to websites where you want scripts to play).
Otherwise (while you're currently stuck with windows), get AVG, it's a free (as in beer) anti-virus and it's pretty good.
Also, you could try to run Ubuntu on your existing machine if cost is an issue and you just want a non-windows OS. Ubuntu is sort of the easy linux, it's free (as in speech), you just need a CD to burn it onto. You can even run live CDs to try it out without having to do the whole repartition the hard drive and install thing. Plus there's a fairly helpful community if you ever run into problems.
Oh, I figured out what it really was last night, some crap called Green Anti-Virus (rogue application). There's a way of deleting it, but I don't really have the time to go through it right now...
