It was decent. It wasn't one of the best they've done, but here's what I've learned from the last few years regarding the Rumble: expect a bunch of upsets.
The Women's Championship match was one of the best I've seen in a while, however. Melina won the title back from Beth Phoenix. I'm a fan of both (yes, I like Melina, even though she can be rather loud and obnoxious, but it's her attitude that wins me over), but these two Divas have some of the best women's matches I've seen in a while. Methinks that WWE has been watching TNA's Knockout Division and taking some cues from them. I'm waiting for WWE to push out their equivalent of the Mighty Kong. But then again, Gail Kim is supposed to be coming back to the WWE any day now...
The World Heavyweight Title match....one of the crappiest matches of the night, in my opinion. John Cena beat JBL. Wow. What a surprise there. The fact that they has Shawn "Sellout" Michaels involved was really what made it crappy, because this angle that they have going with him is worse than the "feud" with him and Chris Jericho. It's like the WWE doesn't know what to do with Shawn anymore. (And I don't think they really know what to do with Chris Jericho, either.) They know he's past his prime, and they keep wanting him to do more that requires making him look like a victim, and I'm done seeing Shawn Michaels look like a pathetic, beaten victim. I've been saying it for the last few years...I love Shawn, but he needs to retire.
The WWE Championship match: best match of the night! Edge vs. Jeff Hardy. Winner: Edge.
Now if anyone's been paying attention, TNA has finally released ChristianCage, and there's been lots of talk of him going back to WWE, so there was plenty of speculation that he would be returning as of last night, either running interference on Edge's match or to be the unknown participant in the Rumble. Christian didn't show up at all last night, much to my disappointment. However, interference was ran by that ugly moo-cow Vickie Guerrero (really, I'm getting sick of seeing her on my TV; this "romance" with her and Edge is hard for me to buy, but I understand that WWE is making sure she's being taken care of since Eddie's been gone). But...with Matt Hardy running interference and taking out his own brother....I hope this leads up to a big match between them at WrestleMania. Like I said, best match of the night.
As for the actual Rumble...I've really gotta bitch about this. I'm getting sick and tired of WWE letting an established superstar win the whole shebang. I got pissed last year when John Cena made his comeback as entrant #30 and winning, so he could get his title shot at WrestleMania. (How scripted was that?) The last few participants in the ring this year were Randy Orton, Triple H, The Undertaker, Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes. It would've been cool if either Ted Dibiase or Cody Rhodes had won, because I like seeing underdogs win events like this. Plus, both of them have promise, even if they are a tag team right now. Randy Orton, Triple H and 'Taker have held so many WWE titles in their career spans that I'm getting sick of seeing them get the title shots. ESPECIALLY Triple H, because anymore, it just reeks of pure nepotism. But Randy Orton won, of course. He's a class-A douchebag; I'm not a fan of his at all. Never have been, never will be. But you know why they had it scripted for him to win....because he attacked Vince McMahon on "Raw" last week. So now there will probably be conflict on "Raw" this week (tonight) as to whether Vince will let Randy have his title shot.
So Christian didn't show up. Wait till the next PPV. But having Rob Van Dam return last night as the surprise participant was exciting.
